Mark C. Carnes is Professor of History of Barnard College and the author of Minds on Fire: How Role-Immersion Games Transform Higher Education (Harvard UP, 2014). Carnes pioneered the creation of Reacting to the Past beginning in 1995, and serves as the Executive Director of the Reacting Consortium, an association of venturesome colleges, universities and individual faculty members dedicated to transforming student learning in higher education. Carnes has also co-authored six Reacting to the Past gamebooks which range in topics from the building of Athens' Democracy in 403 B.C.E. to the 1587 Chinese succession crisis to the French Revolution. Carnes, with John Garraty, were General Editors of the 26-volume American National Biography, for which they were awarded the Waldo Leland Prize of the American Historical Association. He also serves as Executive Secretary of the Society of American Historians.
